Nexus Youth Centre (NYC) is a dynamic youth drop-in environment, located on the second floor of the Mississauga Central Library. It provides services, resources and opportunities for under-resourced youth to achieve normal life goals and contribute to a strong community. Through funding from Services Canada for the Canada Summer Jobs program, we have a position available to a full time student who plans to return to school in September 2018, providing valuable on-the-job experience.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting youth outreach efforts at NYC. In this role, you will work within and outside of the Central Library to raise awareness of NYC services and programs, and invite youth to visit the centre. You will assist NYC staff in coordinating outreach events, such as summer picnics and other special events and will assist in the coordination of summer excursions and activities for NYC youth. You will also assist NYC staff in the day to day operations of the Youth Centre. You will greet and interact with the youth, provide information about community services, provide job/resume support, as well as provide peer counselling, where appropriate. You will also be involved with the planning and facilitation of groups, activities and special events, volunteer coordination, and perform general administrative duties.
The successful incumbent will:
* Be registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and will be returning to school on a full time basis in the September 2018 academic year in a recognized community college (e.g. child and youth work, social service work) or university program (e.g. social work).
* Leadership experience working with youth over the age of 14.
* Have strong communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to take on a leadership/mentorship role.
* Have skills in peer counselling, employment counselling, tutoring or mentoring is an asset.
* Have proven ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information.
This position will have a flexible schedule, including some evening hours as per program needs.
The hourly rate for this position is $14.00/hour, plus 4% in lieu of vacation. The length of the position will be 8 weeks, for a total of 30 hours per week.
